Perm for men
Rarely is anything reinvented. Trends in particular always have their origins somewhere. How do you generate a trend of today from a hype of yesteryear? You just have to adapt the basis to the times. That's how it's in again today - the perm. And not only for women, but also for men! Perm for Men, that's where the name for a new trend came from: Merm! Merm simply stands for the male perm! If you want to transform your sleek look undercut into a look with more structure, i.e. more curls, you should try this trend.
What is the perm for men?
A merm, or perm for guys, is quite simple to describe. The top hair has curls. If the hair is naturally straight, then curls can be created with a waving agent. This chemical breaks down the sulphur bridges in the hair so that it can be shaped. With special curlers, the previously straight hair is then shaped into curls plus fixative. The procedure takes about 2-3 hours.
How do you style a perm for men?
The best way is loose, natural and undone! Styling a perm for guys succeeds with a texturising curling spray or paste. Since young men are more into perms these days, perms tend to be worn with cool styling.
This combo rocks: Long top hair with small curls and an undercut or fade cut. The look is super sporty. If you're more into the surfer look, you should say so at your perm appointment. The size of the curlers determines the size of the curls.
Tip: Don't comb for too long! Otherwise the perm can easily unhinge. The curls lose their bounce, which then looks anything but good.
How do you care for a perm for men?
One thing is clear: a perm puts a lot of stress on the hair and needs care. When women have their hair permed, they have to take intensive care of their lengths and tips. This is much less problematic for men because of their short hair. Nevertheless, men should take good care of their hair after a perm. Otherwise there is a risk of an unkempt poodle look.
Shampoo and conditioner, preferably especially for curly hair, are a must. Why? Because these products are formulated in such a way that the curls retain their bounce and are supplied with the appropriate active ingredients. Every 2 weeks, men's hair, which has been stressed by chemical treatment, is happy about an intensively nourishing hair treatment. It is advisable to spend a little more money on products from hairdresser brands.
Who does a perm for men suit?
In general, this hairstyle for men is more of a trend for young guys. However, curls suit almost every man. Provided the hair is thick enough. Bald patches are not really suitable for this men's hairstyle trend.
If you have always worn your hair straight and are not sure whether curls suit you, you can curl your hair with a conical, tapered curling iron and then decide whether you like a curly hairstyle. The deciding factor here is whether you want a proper perm with small curls or just a light perm.
Is the perm for men suitable for every hair length?
The length of the hair is important. The hair on the top of the head should be at least 10 cm long. If it is shorter, it will be difficult to create beautiful curls. The rollers have to hold the hair. If you have your hair permed by a professional, the look will last two to three months on average. By the way, the cost of a perm for men is around 100 euros , depending on the region.
Who made the perm for men modern (again)?
The worldwide pop and fashion scene - and some football stars! As is so often the case, it is stars who have made this hairstyle fashionable again. At the forefront of Team Locke was football star Lukas Podolski. He surprised his fans back in 2022 with a Merm! In the meantime, he wears his hair straight again. And that's exactly what's great about this look. Men usually have short hair and always have it cut. So there's nothing in the way of wearing a Merm for a change!
Can I do a perm for men myself?
Do a perm yourself? We strongly advise against it. Because there are a lot of things to consider. A hairdresser even attends special courses before offering a chemical makeover like this. Because a really good perm without collateral damage is not easy to achieve. Apart from the fact that chemicals are indeed used, you also need the right curlers. And you need to master the technique of placing the curlers. If you wind them in the wrong direction or forget a strand, the result will look anything but cool.
How do you do a perm on men?
- First, the hair is washed.
- Then the wet hair is twisted into special curlers. The size and number of curlers determine whether the hair ends up really curly or just wavy.
- A waving agent is then applied. This is left to work for about 10-20 minutes.
- The waving agent is then washed out and a so-called fixing liquid is applied.
- In the last step, the curlers are removed and the hair is thoroughly washed, blow-dried and styled.
